Coast Guard Consolidates Elite Units Under New Special Missions Command

The U.S. Coast Guard announced the creation of a new Special Missions Command that will oversee its elite maritime response units including the Maritime Security Response Teams, Tactical Law Enforcement Teams, Port Security Units, and the National Strike Force.

The command, expected to be formally established around Oct. 1, 2026, will be headquartered at the Coast Guard C5I Service Center in Kearneysville, West Virginia. (Read More)


Study Links Just 10 Minutes of AI Use to Reduced Independent Thinking and Persistence

A new study found that just 10 minutes of AI-assisted problem solving can measurably reduce independent performance. In experiments involving 1,222 participants completing math and reading tasks, AI users initially outperformed others, but their performance declined once AI access was removed.

Researchers said the most striking finding was not the drop in scores after AI use ended but the reduced persistence, with participants more likely to skip questions and give up without AI support. (Read More)


New System Tracks Private Jet Spikes as Potential Early Warning of Nuclear Apocalypse

An online “Apocalypse Early Warning System” is tracking spikes in private jet and military aircraft activity as a potential indicator of major global events, including extreme scenarios like nuclear apocalypse.

Created by developer Kyle McDonald, the tool analyzes FAA and ADS-B Exchange data from about 11,000 business jets, military aircraft, and planes with obscured identifiers, and flags unusual spikes in activity. (Read More)

Hackers group ShinyHunters claims it breached education tech giant Instructure, stealing data and private messages tied to around 275 million teachers and students. Instructure confirmed the breach on May 1 and said no passwords or financial data were exposed. (Read More)

Russian President Vladimir Putin has reportedly spent weeks in an underground bunker in Russia’s Krasnodar region and has stopped visiting residences in Moscow Oblast and Valdai, Novgorod Oblast, over assassination fears. DARPA and Northrop Grumman completed the first flight of the XRQ-73, a hybrid-electric stealth flying wing drone, at Edwards Air Force Base in April. The 1,250-pound aircraft operates at 3,500 to 18,000 feet and is designed for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions. (Read More)

A decommissioned Philippine Navy warship was sunk in the Luzon Strait during Balikatan 2026 in a coordinated maritime strike involving multiple weapons systems, including a U.S. Army M30/M31 Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System rocket. On this day in history: On May 7th, 1945, Germany signed an unconditional surrender at Allied headquarters in Reims, France, ending World War II in Europe. Gen. Dwight Eisenhower refused to meet the German delegation for the signing, sending his chief of staff instead. Victory was declared the following day.
