Anthropic Researchers Warn AI Could Kill All Humans Within a Decade

Jacob Coxon, a former OpenAI and Anthropic researcher, warned that people developing AI believe the technology could kill everyone by the end of the decade. He said both companies are moving too quickly toward self-improving AI without adequately addressing the risks.

Anthropic alignment-science lead Evan Hubinger backed Coxon’s concerns, saying he believes there is a greater than 10% chance AI could kill all humans within the next decade. Hubinger said that while current AI systems pose relatively low risks, future systems could improve themselves and gain greater autonomy, potentially creating an existential threat. (Read More)

DHS Unit Uses Financial Data to Flag Drivers for Traffic Stops, Report Says

A Department of Homeland Security unit analyzes Americans’ financial data for signs of criminal activity and shares leads with local police, according to 404 Media.

The program came to light after a Border Patrol analyst flagged a Montana driver based on financial activity that the analyst said was associated with drug trafficking. The analyst alerted the Montana Highway Patrol, which stopped the driver and found marijuana products in his vehicle. Authorities declined to disclose what financial data the unit monitors. Defense Startup Covenant Unveils Low-Cost Cruise Missile ‘Anthem’

Defense startup Covenant unveiled Anthem, a long-range cruise missile designed to carry heavy payloads and be produced in large numbers at lower cost than comparable weapons.

Covenant has not disclosed its range, though unconfirmed reports estimate about 750 miles. Anthem can carry more than 441 pounds and is designed to complement the Tomahawk and JASSM-ER. Production is set to begin in 2027 at 1,000 missiles annually, with plans to eventually reach 5,000. (Read More)

The channel also found software vulnerabilities that could allow the TVs’ microphones to be remotely activated and used as covert listening devices. (Read More)

➤ Meta continued running paid ads containing child sexual abuse material in India even after the government ordered the company to remove such content, according to a Tech Transparency Project report. The group identified 332 such ads on Facebook and Instagram over the past 10 months, including 274 in August alone. (Read More)

➤ U.S. agencies, including the FBI and NSA, accuse Chinese AI companies such as DeepSeek, Moonshot AI and Alibaba of systematically extracting capabilities from U.S. AI models such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok through large-scale “distillation” campaigns. (Read More)

➤ Hermeus has selected Anduril to add autonomous mission capabilities to its Quarterhorse Mk 2 high-speed aircraft, with the first autonomous flight planned for 2027. Anduril will integrate its Lattice for Mission Autonomy software, allowing multiple aircraft to coordinate missions while human operators maintain oversight through the company’s Menace-T C4 system. ➤ The Pentagon will install the Navy's first advanced nuclear microreactor at a weapons station in Crane, Indiana, by 2028. The commercially operated reactor will provide the base with an independent power source, allowing it to continue operating during commercial grid outages. (Read More)

➤ Ukraine’s National Guard has increased its use of fiber-optic drones, which are immune to Russian radio jamming, from 20% to 70%, National Guard Commander Oleksandr Pivnenko said. The Guard has also doubled its interceptor-drone crews over the past six months, according to Pivnenko. (Read More)
