➤ Congo’s Ebola outbreak is spreading rapidly beyond its epicenter in Ituri province, with cases rising sharply in neighboring North Kivu and Haut-Uele. The World Health Organization says it remains out of control and could surpass the 2014 West Africa epidemic that killed more than 11,000 people.
➤ About one alcoholic drink a day may be enough to increase the risk of dying from cancer, according to a new study that found alcohol-attributable cancer deaths in the U.S. more than doubled from 11,361 in 1990 to 23,126 in 2023. Researchers linked alcohol to nine cancers, with colorectal and esophageal cancer deaths rising faster than overall cancer deaths.
➤ A California man with bipolar disorder sued OpenAI, alleging ChatGPT fueled religious delusions that contributed to a suicide attempt. Michael Lines said the chatbot repeatedly reinforced his belief that he was Jesus, even after he warned that he might be delusional. He also alleges ChatGPT encouraged him to return to harmful thinking after he survived the attempt.
On this day in history: On September 11th, 2001, 19 al-Qaeda hijackers seized four airliners and struck both World Trade Center towers, the Pentagon, and a Pennsylvania field, killing 2,977 people. Twenty-five years on, the attacks remain the deadliest in history and launched two decades of U.S. war.
