The Fence With No Gate

China's coast guard spent the summer working the Pacific side of Taiwan, the ocean-facing coast any resupply from Japan or Guam would need. Cutters there hailed merchant ships for their crew counts, and a Singapore-flagged container ship answered.

Ukraine's Deepest Strike Hits Russia's Arctic Gas

Ukraine carried out its deepest drone strike into Russia since the full-scale war began, hitting gas-processing facilities in the Arctic region more than 3,000 kilometers (1,865 miles) from the Ukrainian border.

Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces claimed the attack targeted two Russian gas-processing facilities, one in Novy Urengoy and another in the Purovsky district. The FP-1 drone, developed by Ukrainian defense company Fire Point, was reportedly used in the strike. (Read More)

Anthropic Blocks Scientists’ AI Use Linked to Bioweapons Development

Anthropic disrupted five attempts by “scientists” to use its Claude AI for work that could support biological weapons development, the company said in a threat report.

One request sought to introduce mutations that could make chikungunya progressively more harmful, while another examined how bird flu adapts to mammals and causes severe illness. Anthropic said it could not determine whether the scientists intended to cause harm through their research. (Read More)

➤ Florida sued Netflix, accusing the streamer of tracking children's viewing data after promising families privacy. Attorney General James Uthmeier said Netflix built an advertising business on that data, violating the state's digital privacy law. Netflix called the suit meritless. (Read More)

➤ IDScan, a company that verifies IDs for banks and casinos, confirmed hackers stole more than 150 million driver’s license records from its cloud systems. The confirmation came after a dark-web listing attempted to sell 153 million stolen license scans, including one belonging to War Secretary Pete Hegseth. (Read More)

➤ Spanish intelligence warned Moroccan and Ceuta authorities about planned mass migrant crossings a day before more than 72,000 migrants entered Ceuta from Morocco. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez maintains officials could not have predicted the crisis’s scale. (Read More)

➤ The U.S. Navy’s new point-defense mount combines a .50-caliber machine gun with a 30mm cannon to counter drones. The system is currently deployed on just one destroyer, the USS Mustin, but the Navy plans to add it across its Arleigh Burke-class fleet. (Read More)

➤ General Atomics has unveiled Wildfire, a new drone designed to replace the MQ-9 Reaper. The company says Wildfire can carry at least 2,800 pounds, fly more than 8,000 nautical miles and be produced faster and at a lower cost than the Reaper. (Read More)

➤ Ukraine’s Fire Point expects its FP-7 ballistic missile to be ready for deployment against Russian targets within weeks. The missile has completed two testing stages and is now preparing for combat testing, according to Iryna Terekh, the company’s CEO. (Read More)

➤ Congo’s Ebola outbreak is spreading rapidly beyond its epicenter in Ituri province, with cases rising sharply in neighboring North Kivu and Haut-Uele. The World Health Organization says it remains out of control and could surpass the 2014 West Africa epidemic that killed more than 11,000 people.

➤ About one alcoholic drink a day may be enough to increase the risk of dying from cancer, according to a new study that found alcohol-attributable cancer deaths in the U.S. more than doubled from 11,361 in 1990 to 23,126 in 2023. Researchers linked alcohol to nine cancers, with colorectal and esophageal cancer deaths rising faster than overall cancer deaths.

➤ A California man with bipolar disorder sued OpenAI, alleging ChatGPT fueled religious delusions that contributed to a suicide attempt. Michael Lines said the chatbot repeatedly reinforced his belief that he was Jesus, even after he warned that he might be delusional. He also alleges ChatGPT encouraged him to return to harmful thinking after he survived the attempt.

On this day in history: On September 11th, 2001, 19 al-Qaeda hijackers seized four airliners and struck both World Trade Center towers, the Pentagon, and a Pennsylvania field, killing 2,977 people. Twenty-five years on, the attacks remain the deadliest in history and launched two decades of U.S. war.
