Rio Police Conduct Deadliest Raid in Brazilian History

At least 132 people were killed Tuesday during a massive police operation targeting the Comando Vermelho criminal organization in Rio de Janeiro's Alemão and Penha favelas. Over 2,500 military and civilian police personnel deployed armored vehicles, helicopters, and drones in the operation planned for over a year.

Gang members responded with gunfire and weaponized drones while constructing burning vehicle barricades. The 12-hour clash resulted in 81 arrests and four police officer deaths, with officials describing intense combat.

Dozens of bodies were displayed in public squares for family identification as casualty figures remained disputed between authorities. Rio Governor Cláudio Castro defended the operation as necessary to combat criminal territorial expansion. (Read More)

Russia Closes In on Key Ukrainian City of Pokrovsk

Ukrainian troops are struggling to repel intensifying Russian assaults on the eastern city of Pokrovsk in Donetsk, where fierce urban fighting has erupted.

On Wednesday, open-source group DeepState reported that Russian forces severed a key logistics route through infantry ambushes and drone strikes. It later said small Russian units were infiltrating Pokrovsk and nearby villages by exploiting bad weather and gaps in Ukrainian defenses.

President Vladimir Putin claimed Pokrovsk and Kupiansk were fully encircled. Kyiv denies this but reported about 11,000 Russian troops pressing north and northwest to complete the encirclement. DeepState warned that the situation in Pokrovsk is "on the verge of critical and continues to deteriorate.” (Read More)

Pentagon Withdraws Combat Brigade from NATO Flank

The United States is withdrawing the 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team of the 101st Airborne Division from Romania, with no replacement planned, officials said Wednesday. The drawdown comes as the Pentagon shifts focus to border protection and counter-narcotics missions particularly along the U.S.-Mexico border and in the Caribbean.

The U.S. Army Europe and Africa stressed that the move does not indicate a weakening of Washington’s commitment to NATO but reflects Europe’s increasing capability and responsibility in regional defense.

Romania’s Ministry of Defense confirmed it had been notified about the withdrawal of some U.S. troops from NATO’s eastern flank as part of Washington’s broader reassessment of its global military posture. The ministry said roughly 1,000 American soldiers will remain stationed in the country. (Read More)
