Trump Orders U.S. to Resume Nuclear Weapons Testing

President Donald Trump directed the U.S. military to immediately restart nuclear weapons testing to match rival powers Russia and China. He announced the move shortly before meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea.

It remains unclear whether Trump intends full detonations or other demonstrations of nuclear capability. The United States last conducted a full nuclear test in 1992, and since 1998 no country besides North Korea has carried out explosive nuclear tests. However, the U.S. and other nuclear powers continue to conduct physics experiments, missile tests, and subcritical nuclear tests to ensure their weapons remain operational.

The announcement follows Russia’s recent tests of a nuclear-powered cruise missile and torpedo. Moscow clarified that no actual nuclear detonation occurred during the tests. (Read More)

Israeli Raid in Southern Lebanon Kills Municipal Worker

Israeli troops carried out an overnight raid in Blida, southern Lebanon, killing municipal employee Ibrahim Salameh while he was sleeping, according to Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency. The Israeli military said its troops were conducting an operation to “dismantle Hezbollah infrastructure.”

Following the raid, Israel carried out airstrikes in Labouneh, in southwest Lebanon. Lebanon condemned Israel’s repeated violations of the country’s sovereignty and breaches of the November 2024 ceasefire with Hezbollah, which required Israeli withdrawal and cessation of hostilities.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun ordered the army to confront any future Israeli operations in the south to defend Lebanese territory and citizens. (Read More)

U.S. Strike on Suspected Drug Boat Kills Four

The U.S. military carried out another strike on an alleged drug-trafficking vessel in the Eastern Pacific, killing four people, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced Wednesday. Hegseth said the vessel was traveling along a known smuggling route and carrying narcotics. No U.S. personnel were harmed in the operation.

It was the 14th U.S. strike against suspected drug boats in the Pacific and Caribbean since the campaign began on September 2. The operations have so far killed more than 60 people.

The campaign has drawn regional condemnation, with experts and lawmakers from both parties questioning its legality and the president’s authority to conduct such strikes. (Read More)
