U.S. forces captured Abdiweli Mohamed Yusuf, the finance chief of the Somalia-based affiliate of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), during a ground operation in Puntland’s Iskushuban District in northeastern Somalia on Friday. In a statement issued Saturday, the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) confirmed that its forces had conducted an operation against the ISIS-Somalia terrorist network in coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia. IDF Special Forces Seize Gaza-Bound Aid Ship
Israeli special forces intercepted a vessel carrying pro-Palestinian activists from the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) as they attempted to deliver food and medicine to Gaza. According to the Israel Foreign Ministry, the ship, named Handala, was intercepted in international waters for attempting to breach the naval blockade of Gaza, which has been in place since 2007. At least 38 people were killed and 15 others injured when suspected members of the Islamic State (IS)-linked Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) attacked civilians during a vigil at a Catholic church in a town in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The assault took place around 1 a.m. in the town of Komanda in Ituri province, where gunmen armed with firearms and machetes stormed the church and killed worshippers gathered for prayers. Russia Uses Remote-Control Rail Carts for Ammunition Delivery
Russian forces have introduced remotely operated rail carts to transport supplies in the occupied Donetsk region. In a Telegram post, the Russian Ministry of Defense stated that the cart can carry over a ton of cargo and has a range of up to 50 kilometers. Footage posted by the Ministry shows troops from the 37th Railway Brigade repairing a track near Pokrovsk, then loading a camouflaged trolley with water and what appears to be ammunition. (Read More)
US Fired Over 150 THAAD Interceptors Defending Israel in Iran Conflict
The U.S. Army fired more than 150 Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) interceptors during the 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran in June, marking the system’s most extensive operational use to date, according to The Wall Street Journal. Chinese Research Ship Detected Off Alaskan Coast, Coast Guard Says | CBS News
A Chinese research icebreaker, Xue Long 2, was spotted 290 nautical miles north of Utqiagvik, Alaska, inside the U.S. Extended Continental Shelf. The Coast Guard responded with a C-130J aircraft and confirmed the ship was 130 nautical miles within the U.S.-controlled zone. Canada is also monitoring the vessel, which has not entered its territorial waters. (Read More)
NASA Workforce Shrinks by 20% Under Resignation Program
Nearly 4,000 NASA employees have opted to leave the agency through a voluntary resignation program launched by the Trump administration, NASA confirmed Saturday. Approximately 3,870 individuals are expected to leave, though that figure may fluctuate in the coming days and weeks, NASA spokesperson Cheryl Warner said, adding that about 14,000 employees are expected to remain at the agency.
