Britain Reveals Secret Satellite Jammer and New Space Warfare Unit

Britain has secretly operated a ground-based jammer capable of disrupting hostile satellites for about a year, defense officials said. The disclosure comes as the U.K. launches a new Royal Air Force unit focused on space warfare.

The No. III Space Effects Squadron will disrupt hostile activity in orbit, according to the Ministry of Defence. The development comes amid continued Russian jamming of U.K. satellites and just over a week after the U.S. acknowledged deploying weapons in orbit. (Read More)

Tigray Forces Launch Offensive Against Ethiopian Government

Armed groups in Tigray led by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) launched a major offensive against Ethiopia’s federal government on Wednesday, raising fears of renewed civil war three years after a 2022 peace agreement.

Tigrayan forces seized federally controlled airports in the Tigray cities of Mekelle, Aksum and Shire and attacked government positions in Afar and Amhara. The TPLF said the offensive followed Ethiopian military attacks on Tigray on Tuesday. (Read More)

➤ A China-linked hacking group targeted maritime organizations in at least seven EU states last year, the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity reported. The agency attributed the attacks to Mustang Panda, which the U.S. Justice Department links to the Chinese government. (Read More)

➤ The U.S. Embassy in Canberra has criticized Australia’s proposed laws allowing social media users to opt out of algorithm-driven feeds. The U.S. urged Australia to clearly define how online “harm” and “risk” would be assessed, warning that vague definitions could lead to “censorship of protected speech.” (Read More)

➤ South Korea’s Air Force received its first KF-21 Boramae fighter jet, built by Korea Aerospace Industries. The aircraft flew from the company’s plant in Sacheon to an Air Force unit in Yecheon on Tuesday. The company plans to deliver 40 KF-21s by 2028 and 80 more by 2032. (Read More)

➤ The U.S. Army tested its defenses against drone swarms, sending up to 100 unmanned aircraft against its troops at once in a week-long drill at Fort Bragg. ➤ New research suggests psilocybin, the psychedelic compound in magic mushrooms, may help the brain recover from repeated mild head injuries. In experiments on rats, researchers found that psilocybin reduced brain fluid leakage, improved blood-vessel function and restored communication between brain regions.
